It is widely acknowledged that humankind is on the verge of an irreversible existential climate catastrophe. Many climate tech, adaptation and mitigation solutions offer a “transition” to a real-zero emissions economy. It appears, however, that despite the widespread availability of technology and expertise, we are still nowhere nearer to reaching the global goals set by the UN and individual countries. In this online discussion from earthbot.io, Guy Eames asks Pooran about views on “solutions” to the climate and other environmental crises and what the bottlenecks and behavioural issues are that impede more rapid progress.

Pooran Desai, CEO of OnePlanet
Pooran is a thought leader for sustainability, founder of OnePlanet.com, a neuroscientist who has throughout his career engaged with the private and public sector in numerous ways, championing change in the way we live, work, travel and invest. He is known for developments like Bedzed in London – one of Europe’s best examples of a low carbon community – and creating the One Planet Living framework used around the world including at One Brighton, Villages Natures in Eurodisney, $30bn of other developments, and Oneplanet was developed for the 2012 London Olympics together with WWF. One Planet Living served as the inspiration for the UN Sustainable Development Goals. In 2018 he started building OnePlanet.com – creating a simple tool, to make systems thinking and joined up action understandable and scalable. Pooran has advised the UK Government, investors and major corporations – as well as receiving an OBE.

Guy Eames MSc. BA. is a Sustainability Protagonist and Social Entrepreneur with over 20 years of international business development experience in Multinationals, Start-ups, Industry Associations. Guy believes in delivering change through developing business tools, online training and launching new cutting-edge technologies in emerging markets. Lived and worked in 6 countries.. He has a Master degree in Climate Change and Sustainable Development from Demontfort University, Leicester and a BA in European Business from Reutlingen University (Germany) and Middlesex University. Guy has played various roles in establishing Green Building Councils in 5 countries and has been engaged as a sustainability expert in many large scale projects. He was co-author of the reports to the International Olympic Committee for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. More recent projects include advising the BRE to adapt BREEAM for implementation in non English speaking countries and creating instruments to expand sustainable construction techniques between the BRICS countries.
